Hawaii's papayas are grown in the rich volcanic soil of the eastern end of the island of Hawaii. These papayas have glossy and bright yellow skin, are pear-shaped and weigh about a pound. Their fragrant flesh ranges in colour from golden-yellow to red-orange.
Hawaiian papayas are sweet and the flavour is described as a blend of mango, peach and banana. Edible black seeds inhabit the center cavity and they have a crunchy, peppery taste.
